Victor Schelstraete, die als bokser opviel tijdens de afgelopen Olympische Spelen, sluit niet uit dat hij ook aan de volgende Spelen in Los Angeles wil deelnemen, ondanks zijn plannen om professioneel boksen na te streven.
Na de Spelen had hij even geen doel meer, maar hij heeft als eerste doel gesteld om zijn fysieke conditie, inclusief zijn “sixpack”, terug op te bouwen. Momenteel traint hij twee keer per dag om zijn doelen te bereiken. Hij geeft ook aan dat hij de Olympische Spelen en de sfeer in Parijs mist.
Schelstraete had gehoopt zijn olympische carrière voort te zetten, maar dat is nu onzeker. De toekomst van het olympisch boksen hangt af van de erkenning van een nieuwe boksfederatie, die nog niet rond is. Als deze federatie er niet komt, zou boksen mogelijk geen olympische sport meer zijn. Schelstraete heeft momenteel een contract bij Sport Vlaanderen, maar dat zou kunnen verdwijnen als boksen niet langer op de Olympische Spelen is. Hij overweegt daarom ook de overstap naar professioneel boksen, maar alles is op dit moment onduidelijk. Ondanks deze onzekerheden blijft Schelstraete zich voorbereiden en focust hij zich op zijn verdere carrière.
Olympisch boksen is intens, snel en vereist veel techniek. Het was een nuttige leerschool die me heeft laten zien waar ik sta. Professioneel boksen is meer gericht op opbouwen en op kracht, dat past beter bij mij.

He didn’t have a goal for a while after the Games, but his first goal is to rebuild his physical condition, including his “sixpack.” He currently trains twice a day to achieve his goals. He also says he misses the Olympics and the atmosphere in Paris.
Schelstraete had hoped to continue his Olympic career, but that is now uncertain. The future of Olympic boxing depends on the recognition of a new boxing federation, which has not yet been finalized. If this federation does not come about, boxing would possibly no longer be an Olympic sport. Schelstraete currently has a contract with Sport Vlaanderen, but that could disappear if boxing is no longer at the Olympics. He is therefore also considering a move to professional boxing, but everything is unclear at the moment. Despite these uncertainties, Schelstraete continues to prepare and focus on his future career.
Olympic boxing is intense, fast and requires a lot of technique. It was a useful learning experience that showed me where I stand. Professional boxing is more focused on building and on strength, which suits me better.
